Removal of the teeth of dogs and cats requires rupture of the periodontal ligament. In relatively healthy roots rupture is very difficult, requiring great force. Rupture (and therefore extraction) is best achieved by forcing an elevator or luxator into the periodontal space. In the dog and cat the space is very narrow, quite different to the human situation.
