Locking constructs offer inherently better angular stability than non-locking constructs. This can be useful when managing small fragments where only a low screw count is possible, such as with distal radial fractures, and corrective osteotomies or wedge ostectomies positioned towards the end of a bone. Precise contouring is less important compared with non-locking implants as the underside of the plate does not need to sit flat on the surface of the bone. This can help save significant time in theatre. Stepping the plate off from the bone surface or positioning it at a slight angle to the bone surface can be used to good advantage when correcting angular limb deformities; the cortices do not re-align into an undesired position as screws are tightened.
